I have built this page to demonstrate load sizes so that you can make the correct choice when you hire a van or a man with a van.
The pictures on the right represents an approximate full load in my large Transit vans.
Vans like mine....Ford Transit vans or similar ones such as the Mercedes Sprinter and the Iveco Daily almost always have a high roof and a long wheel base (LWB). The average height man can stand upright inside these vans..so about 6 ft. They all differ slightly in size and it's always best to check with you man and van of hire company before booking these, especially if you have very tall fridges that need to stand upright in transit. Vans like these are best used for smaller jobs like the ones I would do. They are ideal for small flats, student moves, large ebay items, piano moving and small office moves.etc. They do not usually have tail lifts, but a step up the back to make loading easier. I carry a heavy duty ramp in mine to make loading of pianos and heavy items much easier and safer. Most of these type removals vans have side doors so that you can also load from the pavement. Mine has side doors on both sides. They are very convenient to park and ideal for narrow roads or country lanes. They usually take driver plus 2 passengers, so you might be able to ride along depending on how many men you hire.
Luton size vans will take about one and a half times the load that I can take in my large Ford Transit van. They are used by many man and van companies to do small to medium home and office moves and sometimes used for pianos becuase of the tail lift at the rear. ( We prefer to use our ramp as a tail lift can break down ! ) Luton vans can be hired out from your local van hire with a normal drivers licence but require a little more skill to drive than say a Transit van because of the height and sometimes the width. If you have a very tall fridge/freezer combo that you do not want to lie down, then this is the van size you need to go for. They also usually take driver plus 2 passengers, so you might be able to ride along depending on how many men you hire.
Please note: 1 Manandvan.co.uk does NOT use this size van but they are very easy to locate and about half of all man with van businesses use them.
For the large job where you would prefer to save money and do the whole removal yourself rather than paying the fees of large removals companies, you will need to hire a 7.5 ton removals truck. Before arranging this, be aware that in the UK there seems to be some restictions on who can drive a 7.5 tonne lorry, but please seek advice from your local van hire centre first. You are unlikely to find a man and van business who will operate a 7.5 ton van. With this size of lorry, you should expect to fit much more in for larger moves nationwide. Many of the Truck Hire companies have depots around the country where you can drop off the van, or some even arrange collection once you're done.
Please note: 1 Manandvan.co.uk does NOT use this size van!
Thanks for the continued support.
